  • All schools funded by the state (including non-maintained special schools) are inspected by The Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) and inspection findings of both the educational and boarding provisions are published on the OFSTED website https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk.  Independent schools are inspected similarly by the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate (ISI) http://www.isi.net  

  • Each case will vary according to need. The commitments of all stakeholders should be identified clearly before any placement is made.

  • Occasionally, and however well planned it is, a boarding school placement will not work. It is important that the local authority has a strategy to deal with this and that stakeholders and partners know what their responsibilities will be in these circumstances.
